Cracked wheels are dangerous and should be repair as soon as possible!
Safety
Driving with a cracked wheel can cause loss of control, tire blowouts, and damage to other vehicle components
Cracks can worsen over time and lead to catastrophic failure
Cracked wheels are an MOT failure
Causes
Impacts from potholes or curbs
Extreme stress from towing, especially near maximum towing capacity
Overheating during long, steep descents
How can a cracked wheel be fixed?
A crack can be repaired with a weld (most of the time). We TIG weld the crack precisely and then finish it off by sanding it for a smooth finish. If your wheel is not being refurbed at the same time, we will cover the weld with some paint to offer some protection the welded area and also to make it a little more aesthetically pleasing.
To give the repaired crack extra strength, we do recommend a Powder Coat Wheel Refurbishment, the powder coating gives a protective coating to the weld and also gives more strength to the wheel.
What is the process for an alloy weld at PowderTech?
At PowderTech we remove your tyre(s) and inspect the wheel to make sure there is no further damage that was hidden and we couldn’t see before. If there are no more visible cracks, we will repair and weld to a very high quality, making the wheel as good as new. We will touch up the welded area with paint if you are not opting for a wheel refurbishment. We will then build your wheels back up and you are ready to go.
How Much is an alloy weld?
We price our alloy welding per crack, NOT per wheel. For a crack it is £70+VAT. Our alloy welding is available in our online shop, which means payment can be made using Klarna or Clearpay at checkout.
